First Soviet mass produced tank w...Hi for everyone! First Soviet mass produced tank with epicyclic steering system that is IS-2. Similar system is in T-54/T-55 and T-62. Good description of system from old Soviet tanks is on article about T-54 on Tankograd blog (text was partially written be me). <br /><br />Interestingly, in Polish terminology, system from Panther tank is called "epiccyclic steering system with dual power supply". In Panther tank steering system we have epicyclic gear for left track and epicyclic gear for right track. Ring gear work as power input, planet carrier work as power output. During forward ride sun gear is immobilised. In case of turn into left, sun gear of left epicyclic gear have counterrotation which decrease speed of planet carrier. Sun gear is powered by power stream which bypasses gearbox. Due this feature, speed of sun gear depend only from engine rpm's. Speed of ring gear depend also from gear in gearbox. Due this features turning radius depend from gear engaged in gearbox.<br /><br />BTW- we have two interesting term which is used in Polish books about steering systems. First group of steering system and second group of steering system. First group- during turn faster track have bigger speed than during forward ride. First group of steering systems based on differential idea. Second group- during turn faster track have this same speed like during forward ride.
